You’ve just bought
a small craft – a kayak, a small fishing boat or your kid’s dinghy and
you’ve realised that looking up at the sky and wondering if it’s going
to rain is just not an accurate enough forecast for your future adventures.
Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned paddler this one day basic navigation
course will answer all the questions that you’ve always wanted to ask
and more importantly, all the questions that you never thought of!
Over the day we will cover navigation topics such as nautical charts
and symbols, tides and their effects, weather forecasting, aids-to-navigation,
use of the magnetic compass, estimating speed and distance and route
planning. A basic overview of VHF and GPS technology will also be covered.
The course will include theory and water-based navigation exercises.
In the excitement of purchasing your new sea kayak, it is easy to forget
that without being adequately prepared and informed, the sea can quickly
become a very dangerous place. This course emphasises the safety aspects
of taking to the waves and helps you to make informed decisions on when
and when not to go paddling.
